Chilean Sphagnum Moss – Premium Growing Medium (5-Star Quality)

The ultimate benchmark in premium plant substrates. Harvested in Chile and rigorously sorted, this 5-Star Premium sphagnum moss features extra-long, pliable, and debris-free fibers. It combines exceptional water retention (up to 20 times its weight in water) with outstanding root aeration and naturally acidic, antifungal properties.

*Ideal for: Repotting demanding carnivorous plants (Nepenthes, Heliamphora, Cephalotus), epiphytic orchids, tropical terrariums, and delicate cuttings.

*Properties: High water retention, maximum root aeration, natural antibacterial barrier, and acidic pH.

*Available sizes: Compressed bags of 150 g, 250 g, 500 g, and 1 kg[cite: 1].

Dehydrated Chilean Sphagnum Moss – 5-Star Premium Quality

Carefully selected for growing delicate and demanding plants, this Chilean sphagnum moss (Sphagnum magellanicum) of 5-Star Premium grade consists exclusively of long, supple, and hand-sorted strands. Naturally rot-proof, it combines exceptional water retention with optimal aeration for the root system.

1. Quality and Origin

*5-Star Selection: Uniform long fibers, free from dust and bulky twigs. Unlike low-grade shredded sphagnum moss, it does not compact and retains its springiness and volume over repeated waterings.

*Natural Origin: Sustainably harvested from Chilean peatlands, dried, and compressed for packaging.

2. Agronomic Properties

*Water Retention: Capable of absorbing up to 20 times its dry weight in water, releasing moisture gradually and evenly.

*Root Aeration: The open structure of the long fibers traps air pockets, preventing root asphyxiation and promoting robust, fibrous root growth.

*Antiseptic Properties: Naturally rich in antibacterial and antifungal phenolic compounds, significantly reducing the risk of root rot and damping-off.

*Optimal Chemistry: Naturally acidic pH (4.5 to 5.0) and virtually zero electrical conductivity (EC), ideal for plants sensitive to mineral salts and hard water.

3. Recommended Uses

*Carnivorous Plants: Pure or blended (with perlite, bark) for demanding species such as Nepenthes, Heliamphora, Cephalotus, and Darlingtonia.

*Orchids & Epiphytes: Slab mounting on bark or potted in slatted baskets for species requiring consistent moisture and air circulation.

*Terrariums & Living Walls: Background lining for humid setups, maintaining stable humidity in tropical vivariums, and establishing live mosses.

*Propagation & Air-Layering: Highly reliable rooting medium for delicate stem cuttings and air-layering (Aroids, Ficus).

4. Preparation and Directions for Use

*Rehydration: Place the required amount into a clean container and submerge in pure, low-mineral water (rainwater or reverse osmosis water).

*Soaking Time: Allow to swell for 10 to 15 minutes to let the fibers fully expand to their maximum volume.

*Squeezing: Gently squeeze by hand to discard excess water before potting. The moss should be spongy and damp, not dripping wet or over-compressed.

5. Available Sizes

*150 g Bag: Yields approximately 12 liters of rehydrated sphagnum moss (ideal for 2 to 3 small pots or cuttings).

*250 g Bag: Yields approximately 20 liters rehydrated (practical size for repotting orchids or medium terrariums).

*500 g Bag: Yields approximately 40 liters rehydrated (perfect for multiple Nepenthes pots or planted terrariums).

*1 kg Bag: Yields approximately 80 liters rehydrated (economical bulk size for large collections and containers).

Grower's Tip: Never pack sphagnum moss tightly into the bottom of the pot. Gently drape and nestle it around the roots to preserve the microscopic air pockets that prevent root suffocation and encourage vigorous new growth.
